Can joint locks work for Self defense, maybe, but you need to be very skilled to get your timing right and execute them effectively. There is one area of martial arts I’ve found they work the best.

youre too weak not to know how to deal with that
you didn't do a kuzushi though? you just went right for it and he could tell which direction your energy was going on
You're awesome sinse, do you have a school in south jersey?
Unless the fights on the ground, theyβre pointless imo
Use two in a real fight
Ahh it does work tho. Wtf
Dude this made me watch all of your videos seeing as you actually are realistic
Theyβre good for bouncers and event security.
If you had to pick just between 1 style to learn for street fights, kick boxing or bjj?
"Train your ass off". Me: " I'm tryingπ"
Agreed, but there is another use for wristlocks:
If you are a policeofficer and do have to controll an aggressive and unpredictable person it is still one of the methods that cause the lowest amount of damage to that person yet let you controll them further (after bringing them down) without waisting too much energy.
For selfdefense… Yeah, well… a nice straight punch into the face does usually a better job.
I'm not the same kind of self-defense artist you are because I run in where you run out. If I hear a bunch of people abusing somebody & Ally I'll wait into it just because I can't live with myself if I run away like you do. Since you're looking to run all the time wrist locks won't work for you you need to strike or a push or shove so you can get away. I had a friend named rotten Jimmy and man was he awful he was 5-foot 465 lb of grease lightning and it is all fifth joint locks and feet there was nothing to him you couldn't see anything but fist joint locks and feet. He was in a bar one-time misbehaving because no one could tell him what to do for some reason and the owner of the bar came up there with for bouncers behind him and poke rotten Jimmy on the chest with his finger. Before you can say trouser biscuit little Jimmy had that manager twisted up in a joint lock and he didn't let everybody make a circle around him like you do and then shove the littlest one to get away he had that manager right in between him and the bouncers and everytime them bouncers even blink he twists a little bit on that joint lock. Every time those bouncers even blink Jimmy put the paint on that boss and told them I'll punish him for you boys we don't want to watch me punish him don't move I'll punish him I'll punish him for you. The manager saying shut up and do what he told you to shut up and do what he tells you shut up shut up telling the crew to be quiet.then he did the run around like a little beer move that you were knocking everybody for when you were letting to make a big circle around you right and Jimmy didn't want you to make a circle around you because he didn't want to have to beat all of you to death. So he used The joint lock to keep the manager between him and the other for bouncers back his way to the door turn loose of the manager and he was gone. It was a wonderful thing for these people because those managers and those bouncers and all the other customers couldn't have done anything with rotten Jimmy rotten Jimmy train so much and had he could run ten miles without breathing heavy that if you jumped on rotten Jimmy you just couldn't bring enough people for rotten Jimmy to wear out going through the crowd. I love rotten Jimmy haven't seen him in years. I just hope whenever somebody is abusing some woman in an alley or something rotten Jimmy happens to be on his way home from work and has a few minutes to spare to teach a person not to abuse a woman.
Thank you for that!
Gorilla hands… π€·
Wise words.
Itβs easy to do these self defense videos when the opponent isnβt fighting back.
Yea, reach for my wrist and your balls are kicked up to your throat.
To free yourself is to free your enemy.
my dad used to wrist lock me and pressure point my neck or traps to get compliance when I was being a little shit. "Clean your room!"
""NO!!!!" pinches neck "OK OK OK OK OK!" or I'd go to drop my school supplies all over the table and he'd wrist lock me and be like "AH" and I'd stop my bullshit before the pain got worse ππππππ
I disagree. You just don't know the technique.
It works when implementing strikes ( atemi) in combination with wrist locks and throws . Not mention eye gauges and throat punches . Remember this is streets . Has worked for me . Anyway thatβs my 2 cents π
Ya they are mostly good for getting the feel of your opponent, how to manipulate joints. But in a fightβ¦ they Shuld be the last thing you try. That said when you get one in a fight it is cool as shit. In the 90s thanks to Van Damme people liked to leave there punches hainging out. That is the only time I have ever fallen into one. Everyone was very impressed including myself. π
Some wrestling take downs are good to ground and pound can can help as well and for the bottom if you find yourself there to Anderson, Silva style
Heβs missing one huge point if youβre really skilled at juju jujitsu Judo on the street but with grappling learning with grappling not just Street moves good both together. Hell if you just did tournaments stupid jujitsu person still that shit ainβt gonna fly and laugh at that shit I mean if you have no street skills, you better be really high level tournaments but then still as long as youβre brave enough to go forward forget about it theyβre all done.
If you have that skill level to make them work the world is a better place..
I don't remember your guy's name, but we do appreciate his hard work as well. I wish I could offer an ice pack. Thanks guys
Well I must say 3 times in my life I used a wrist lock in a scalating situation and worked out fine.
Yeah itβs like youβd have to elbow smash a pressure point to weaken the forearm first. I think they have techniques like that in some Kung Fu styles. I appreciate your experiential knowledge in all this. Great videos!
You are doing the wrist break wrong when you told him to grab tighter.
Always twist to the thumbπ
These will never work
You tripping
they only work if you are ina situation where vicyory is already secure
U Tha man!
Correct , when ever I used hakido in street was after I softened up the drunk , knew I was in total control and wanted to inflict pain for direction purposes but not to injure any further
Train ur ass off βΊοΈπ π€£
Can you please explain this to the us army? Thanks
To be honest I disagree with 2 things:
1: they don't work against punches. This is coming from someone who has REPEATEDLY used wristlocks to defend against punches in resisting scenarios. They work well, better than punches in my opinion, but you need to train them against punches unlike most Aikido places with an overhead chop.
2: I don't really consider wrist locks soft. Many hard martial art styles such as Nihon Goshin Aikido, Kempo, Hapkido, and Jujutsu all use wristlocks (I don't consider Jujutsu a soft art considering it was made to kill someone). Wrist locks are a companion to hard techniques, not really other soft ones.
Also that "if they tighten thier grip wristlocks won't work" is complete BS, litterally the most ELEMENTARY wrist lock, sankyo, starts from a FIRM hand grip. Also for this guy to say that Wing Chun works in a fight but not an ENTIRE CLASS of martial arts techniques is downright dumb.
Roll your wrist that's what they teach in BJJ when someone got the wrists
When I was younger I had an ex marine friend of mine try to show me this move he learned in the military "that could take anyone down" it was one of those wrist lock things. Had zero effect on me and I was a fat tub of lard back then.
Judging by your demonstration at the end, your theory appears to be based on a misunderstanding of Arthrokinematics, as you did not isolate the wrist joint from the rest of your partner's musculoskeletal system. This evidently allowed him to create a macro-level isometric contraction – meaning you were fighting multiple joints working in conjuction, from the elbow and shoulder to the hips, knees and ankles.
This might explain why, despite years of training, you could only make them work in BJJ. Isolating joints on the ground is a far simpler operation as our musculoskeletal mobility – being bipedal mammals – is drastically lowered on the ground as compared to standing.
The wrist joint is actually quite weak, evidenced by the fact that upwards of 25% of sports injuries are wrist injuries. It is also estimated that approximatelyΒ 11-20% of all visits to emergency rooms in the United States are due to injuries to the hands and wrists. The epidemiology of wrist pain and injury is well known.
Simply isolating the wrist joint for long periods with zero impact (for example when using a laptop keyboard or smartphone) causes CTS, elevates the risk of arthritis, and causes all sorts of other medical issues.
There also must be a reason that, for probably all of martial arts history, attacking the wrist has been a staple tactic for an uncountable number of martial arts systems. Just the other day I made a video on the anatomical effects of attacking the wrist for knife defense, and drew upon footage filmed this year of South Korean Special Forces employing these tactics. Hard to imagine such methods would survive the selection process of modern day militaries if they genuinely were "bullshit."
I totaly agree i train in pak hok pai,,, and even an aikido black belt would have a hell of a time trying to armbar me…
Two. Other things you could do in that scenario because he wonβt let your hand go one way it can go a different way which is straight. His thumb did not seem like it was completely wrapped around your wrist. Iβd be able to break it that way. (The grip) Second, if that doesnβt work, then you can kick at the knee or kick out the groin. As long as you continue to move away from his power hand or his free hand, then you should be safe not to get punched in the face or be grappled further. But my Krav Maga teacher always told me not to play the game My opponent wants to play if heβs grabbing, then punch him if heβs punching, then grab him. π π π
They only work if your bigger- got it lol
Are you wearing blue jeans to simulate how you'd be able to move in a real situation with jeans?
First you say they don't work and then you say they WILL work with years of training. Make up your mind bro. You contradict yourself. And by the way, I can personally attest that they actually DO work, especially in a Bar, against a belligerent drunk asshole who wants to hurt people. So YES, in certain situations they do indeed work. In other words…. YOU'RE WRONG!!!
As always your π― percent correct
Years and year of training and practice practice practice are the only way for this be successful
Yes, months and possibly years of training under the right instructors (and right attitude) on wristlocks work.
It's about technique over size and strength.
