Donnie Yen Chi-tan is a Hong Kong actor, martial artist, and action director who was born on July 27, 1963. Yen is a prominent action star in Hong Kong. By choreographing MMA in many of his films from the early 2000s, Yen is largely recognized for introducing mixed martial arts (MMA) into mainstream Asian cinema. Zhang Weili, the first Chinese female UFC champion, claims that Yen’s movie exposed her to MMA. With proficiency in a variety of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Boxing, Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do, Hapkido, Mixed Martial Arts, Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Hung Ga, Sanda, Judo, Wing Chun, and Wushu, Yen has demonstrated his versatility in the combat sport[citation needed]. Yen, one of the most well-known movie stars in Asia in the early 2000s, consistently ranks among the highest-paid performers in the region. Four movies and six commercials brought in HK$220 million (US$28.4 million) for Yen in 2013. Many people give Yen the credit for helping Wing Cun become more well-known in China. In the box office-successful Ip Man film series, in which he plays Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man, more individuals are taking up the martial art, and hundreds of new Wing Chun schools have sprouted in mainland China and other regions of Asia. Ip Chun, Ip Man’s eldest son, even said that he is appreciative of Yen for popularizing his family’s artwork and enabling people to remember his father’s legacy. Additionally, his performances as Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Xiang in XXX: Return of Xander Cage (2017), and Commander Tung in Mulan (2018) have earned him attention on a global scale (2020).
